Gel filtartion chromatography

also known as size exclusion chromatography or molecular sieve chromatography, separates target molecules by selecting peaks in descending order based on their size.

Gel filtration chromatography is often used for subsequent purification stages with low impurities. It is also

used for purification of smaller samples.

It can also be used in the crude purification stage for group separations (such as desalting).

Gel filtration chromatography requires only a single buffer; the type of buffer has little impact on the separation. Adding 150mM sodium chloride to the buffer can effectively reduce nonspecific adsorption of the target protein.
