Scienion AG
Development of microarrays
SCIENION AG is a Berlin-based life science company offering complete solutions in the field of parallel bioanalytics. The company has developed a variety of enabling technologies for molecular biology and cell-based assays. It is targeting its current market by offering a wide range of modular services and products. Customers include academic research institutions, biotech, phar-maceutical and diagnostic companies.
In 2000, Scienion started off as a biochip platform company. Beside chemicals and drugs, its focus was on the ability to place or dispense all kinds of biomolecules like nucleic acid probes and proteins and assay them simultaneously on specific surfaces. In this business area, Scienion focuses on the development of customised microarrays for human genome research and genome research on microorganisms.

In 2003, Scienion launched the sciFLEXARRAYER, a state of the art drop on demand piezoelectric dispensing system which has become the leading product in the company’s hardware portfolio. Scienion has been able to successfully integrate its sciFLEXARRAYER platform as well as proprietary surfaces into fields like genomics, proteomics including mass spectrometric analysis, Lab-On-A-Chip technologies, cell based assays and diagnostics.
The sciFLEXARRAYER allows the aspiration of ultra low level liquid volumes within the picoliter to nanoliter range from different reser-voirs and contact-free micro drop delivery onto a variety of carriers.
Scienion’s proprietary chip technology and hardware were twice awarded with the “Innovationspreis Berlin-Brandenburg”. The annual prize is awarded jointly by the German federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg for product and process innovations and innovative technology services. In 2000, Scienion received the prize for its innovative chip technology which relies on a novel surface coating of microarrays creating nearly wall-less reaction chambers. In 2004, Scienion won the prize for its sciFLEXARRAYER piezoelectric dispensing system.
