The history of Berthold Technologies as the developer of innovative and original sensors dates back until 1949. The original Berthold product line consisted mostly of sensors and detection systems for nuclear radiation and X-rays.

Founded in 1949 by Prof. Rudolf Berthold, the company was named Laboratorium Prof. Rudolf Berthold. In 1960 Dr. Fritz Berthold (son of the former) took over the management of the company until 1989 when the company was acquired by the US EG&G Inc. and later named PerkinElmer Inc.

In 2000 the Berthold family and Hans J. Oberhofer re-purchased the company from PerkinElmer Inc. and named it BERTHOLD TECHNOLOGIES GmbH & Co KG.
