Expression Pathology

Expression Pathology Inc. (EPI) is a private biotechnology company leading the development of innovative tissue protein analysis methods for research and diagnostic applications.

EPI is also using its technologies to develop proprietary new cancer tests, both novel protein biomarkers to aid prognosis and treatment decisions and an accurate mass spectrometry-based alternative to current qualitative methods for measuring proteins in tissue.

Expression Pathology was co-founded by David B. Krizman, Marlene M. Darfler and Peter Tunón and is 100% owned by its management and founders.

In 2002, Expression Pathology obtained its first seed funding from the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development and Montgomery County Department of Economic Development. It is pursuing SBIR and state and county research funds and seeking investments from strategic partners and private equity capital sources to support the development of its technologies and business.

The company’s proprietary “tissue microproteomics” technologies enable discovery and analysis of protein biomarkers in tissue employing the latest advances in mass spectrometry. Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples are routinely collected, tested and archived in medical treatment and research facilities. They constitute a huge untapped resource for discovery, validation and accurate measurement of biomarkers of disease progression and recurrence, drug response and toxicity. Expression Pathology’s Liquid Tissue® sample preparation and Director™ laser microdissection technologies are opening new ways to extract valuable protein information from FFPE tissue.

The ProteoSOL™ Tissue Extraction System is based on the Liquid Tissue® ID Protein Prep Kit. It is designed for the extraction of proteins directly from formalin fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples. The system enables immunodetection of proteins in a membrane-based assay. Samples processed with this system can be arrayed and detected on a membrane using high-throughput detection methods. Immunodetection with specific antibodies allows the direct comparison of a specific protein across multiple samples in a single array.
