The Celera Genomics Group was established in May 1998 by PE Corporation (now Applera Corp.) and J. Craig Venter. The latter is the founder of The Institute for Genomic Research (now run by his wife) (TIGR) and led the first successful effort to sequence the entire H. influenzae genome.
Celera’s services business, Berkeley HeartLab, Inc. (BHL), is a high complexity CLIA certified laboratory that offers over 25 clinical diagnostic tests including assays that determine lipoprotein particle size and density based on proprietary segmented gradient gel electrophoresis technology, along with state-of-the-art genetic testing.
