A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences
Biomedical science with research supported by a number of facilities including two embryo laboratories, two DNA sequencers, two oligonucleotide synthesizers, denovirus, lentivirus and retrovirus laboratories, an NMR-unit, a GMP-laboratory, a functional genomics and bioinformatics core unit and a morphometry unit. In particular the animal biotechnology group (http://www.uku.fi/aivi/index_Biotechnology.htm) has worked with transgenic and gene-disrupted Finnish animals.
Founded in 1989, the A. I. Virtanen Institute now has a research institute and graduate school. For 2007-2009, the institute holds a status as a Centre of Excellence in Teaching awarded by FINHEEC.
The focus of a project of the Laboratory of Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics (Dr. Wong’s group took up work in 2000, Director: Garry Wong) lies on the improved visualisation of clustered microarray produced data.
The Kuopiochip project is pursued by 10 research laboratories at the University of Kuopio to design, produce and use in their experiments to customise a microarray. The Kuopiochip 1.0 has 250 different genes divided onto 288 spots in duplicate. Further information on the participating laboratories, the Consortium and the Kuopiochip can be found at http://www.uku.fi/laitokset/aivi/index.htm.
