Affymetrix, Inc.

Disease management, biochips, arraying systems, GeneChip®, SNP identification, expression profiling by applying the principles of semiconductor technology, scientific software.

Affymetrix was founded by Alejandro Yaffaroni. It was spun out of Affymax in 1991 and began independent operations in 1993.

Affymetrix formed Perlegen Sciences to analyse and catalogue genetic variations; Neomorphic, a computational genomics company, was bought to expand its technology base. GlaxoSmithKline owns approximately 17% of this company.

In October 2001, Affymetrix and Hyseq ended their four-year patent litigation suit and the two companies launched a joint venture company, N-Mer, Inc. which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Callida Genomics, Inc. Callida Genomics is a majority owned subsidiary of Hyseq. N-Mer is intended to commercialise and develop Hyseq’s sequencing-by-hybridisation technology. N-Mer has access to Callida’s proprietary sequencing-by-hybridisation technology from Hyseq and to Affymetrix’ GeneChip® technology.
