Advalytix

Microfluidic processors

Advalytix is a spin-off from the Center for NanoScience (CeNS) of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) in Munich/Germany, founded by Achim Wixforth who is now professor in Augsburg. In 2002, Wixforth also received the ‘Innovations Anerkennungspreis’ for the company’s ArrayBooster.

Advalytix was acquired by Beckman Coulter in 2009.

Advalytix’ microfluidics applications are powered by surface acoustic wave (SAW) transducers, which are similar to the ones integrated in cellular phones. Advalytix has protected its intellectual property by more than 30 patent applications and is beginning to license the non-invasive micro-agitation technology for applications in a broad variety of fields.

As fluid volumes approach the microliter range, mixing becomes in-creasingly difficult with conventional methods. Agitating small fluid volumes is precisely where SAW mixers are the technology of choice.

Advalytix’ SAW mixer chips efficiently agitate liquid volumes from 50 nanoliters to 500 microliters without coming into contact with the liquid. The surface acoustic waves propagate through plastics, glass and metals and agitate liquid volumes in standard formats such as microtiter plates or anayzer cuvettes.
