The National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) was established in Tokyo in 1874 as the Tokyo Drug Control Laboratory (later renamed the Tokyo Institute of Hygienic Sciences). Today it is part of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW).
