NCBI - National Center for Biotechnology Information

Development of new information technologies to aid in the understanding of fundamental molecular and genetic processes, bioinformatics

The NCBI was established in 1988 as a national resource for information with regard to molecular biology: public databases (GenBank DNA sequence database; OMIM, MMDB, UniGene, Taxonomy Browser, CGAP, software tools, and information provider. The NCBI created the first public CGAP website and designed analytical tools for the CGAP Tumor Gene Index. NCBI developed Digital Differential Display, an online tool to compare computed gene expression profiles between selected cDNA libraries.

CGAP supports the production of SAGE libraries and their sequencing while NCBI has created a repository for the sequence data, developed data processing algorithms, and developed a SAGE website at NCBI.

NCBI implemented to maintain an internal database that tracks CGAP samples, libraries and clones used in the generation of EST and SAGE data.

NCBI is collaborating closely with a component of Cancer Chromosome Aberration Project (CCAP) using FISH.
