I.M.A.G.E. Consortium

Gene discovery

The I.M.A.G.E. (The Integrated Molecular Analysis of Genomes and their Expression) Consortium is a non-profit organisation that was initiated in November 1993 by four academic groups on a collaborative basis (M. Bento Soares, Mihael Polymeropoulos, Charles Auffray, Greg Lennon).
The objectives of the Consortium are
1) to share libraries of complementary DNA (cDNA) clones, which are made from DNA copies of mRNA that are joined to a vector, allowing for propagation in bacteria;
2) to place data concerning sequence, mapping, and expression derived from the use of the clones in public domain databases.

I.M.A.G.E. holds the world´s largest public collection of genes. More than two million cDNA clones are distributed worldwide at minimal cost/free of royalties to recipients agree with the guidelines of the Consortium through a network of five distributors. All sequences that are obtained are submitted to the dbEST databank.

Funding is received form the US Department of Energy (Office of Biological and Environmental Research) and the National Cancer Institute.
